HCS FARM DAY-2012

Thank you to Mrs. Bossard's students and volunteers for a very fun day at FARM DAYS.  We tasted great foods, we saw and petted lots of different types of farm animals, we went on a tractor ride, and even got a chance to do a tractor pull!

St. Patrick's Day Tricks!

Our little friends made quite a mess in our classroom!  Can you believe they did all of these silly things: green glitter, messy painted foot prints, gold coins, green sugar on our toast, green milk, and they even changed our water table green!

ANIMALS IN THE WINTER

We had a lot of fun learning about what animals do when winter comes.  We learned some animals HIBERNATE, some ADAPT, and some MIGRATE.  We did an experiment showing why animals need a layer of fat to keep them warm all winter long.  We took a field trip to Roger's Environmental Center in Sherburne to look for signs and tracks of animals that adapt. We also got to see a dead fox that must have been dragged onto the ice covered pond by a predator. (I am sure you all heard about this!)  On Friday we made bagel bird feeders for the birds who stay North during the colder months.  They are hanging outside of our classroom windows-we get to bird watch every day.  We also had a "hibernation party" with our PreK friends from Ms. Briggs' class.  We shared a bear snack, and hibernated in the huge class den.  We're pretty sure real bears don't watch a story on the Smartboard, but we sure liked it!

When Science and Writing Collide!

Check out the pictures below...

In writer's workshop we have been learning about all the ways people use writing to communicate with the world around them.  Over the past few days, we have discuss how lists can help you organize your thoughts and help you remember things.  Today during science, we explored what happens to ice when we add heat to it.  After a very cool experiment and some amazingly rich discoveries, we decided to write a list to help us remember what we saw.  Here is what we came up with:

ICE
HEAT
WATER
MORE HEAT
STEAM
                                                                                      BUBBLES
                                                                                     DROPS OF WATER
                                                                                     RAIN

Here are some new pictures-we have been very busy!

Our visit with Santa!

12-12-11  Today we walked to the Colgate Bookstore to visit with Santa!  It was a lot of fun.  We were sure to bring our list with us in hopes to share our wishes.  After the long walk back, we celebrated filling our gumball jar with a hot chocolate party-YUM!

Our Pre-Kers work hard-but we also love to play hard!

Tailgating with the Team!

Last week some players from Colgate University's football team came to tailgate with us.  We face painted, had a snack, checked out all of their game gear, and the players even read an ABC football book to us.  Thank you Coach Knowles and your Raiders for taking time out of your busy schedules to hang out with us!  GO 'GATE!!

Our Third Grade Reading Buddies

Every Friday we get together we our third grade reading buddies to share a good story.  During this time we are great listeners and readers as well.  Last week we shared our books, Pumpkins Everywhere!  Isn't it amazing that our PreKers are already learning to read!  YAY!

Hamilton Firehouse-October 2011

We made applesauce!

Not only did we make and taste applesauce, we have been learning about the steps it took to make the recipe.  (SEQUENCING)  First we washed the apples. Then we peeled the apples with our apple peelers.  Next, we chopped our apples into tiny pieces.  Then we added sugar, cinnamon, and water.  Then we cooked it all night.  Last we ate it-YUM!
